'Tournament Of Champions Champs!' - Jan. 20th-22nd, 1994 - Glendale became the first local team (and one of only two) to ever win the Bass Pro Shops Tournament Of Champions over three glorious days in January of 1994. In the first round, the Falcons overpowered a 16-4 Natchez, Mississippi squad 78-49. Semifinal action saw Glendale defeat the #1 ranked team in Missouri Class 4A St. Charles West 72-50. West would go on to place third in 4A that season and would return to win the T Of C the next season (as well as a state title). In the championship game, Glendale jumped on Middle Village, NY Christ the King 9-2 in the first quarter, but had to withstand a fourth quarter comeback by the Royals (26-19) to hold onto a 55-53 victory! Nothing can take the place of winning a state title (something Glendale's been unable to do for 49 years now), but winning the most attended high school basketball tournament in the entire country, is almost as good. In nearly 30 years, only five local teams have ever reached the championship game (Parkview '92, Glendale '94, Glendale '99, Logan-Rogersville '04, and Kickapoo '05).

'First Ever National Ranking for SWMO' - Dec. 27th, 1998 - Glendale became the first boys team in Southwest Missouri to ever be regionally and/or nationally ranked with its 8th in the Midlands region rating. Glendale would remain among the top ten teams in the Midlands region throughout the rest of the season. They reached as high as #2 in the Midlands region in late February. Overall, they were ranked as high as 27th in the country. Outside of Kickapoo's run in the mid-2000's, no other SWMO boys team has ever been ranked as high nationally.

'Final Four '86 & '90' - Glendale hasn't had much luck in post-season play over the last 49 years, but on two occasions they have made it to the Final Four. In 1986, the Falcons had a so-so 14-10 regular season record, but caught fire late in the season. Glendale won the Class 4A, District 9 Tournament by beating Lebanon 81-31 and Hillcrest 57-52 in the championship game. They moved past Joplin 59-45 in the sectional game and advanced to the program's first ever Final Four with a 47-44 win over Columbia Hickman. In 1990, Glendale was one of the best teams in the state with a 22-3 regular season record. They won the Class 4A, District 9 Tournament with commanding victories over West Plains 96-65 and Hillcrest 56-41. The sectional contest against Parkview was a true battle back-and-forth with Glendale coming out on top 54-53. Wentzville-Holt had a 11-game winning streak coming into the quarterfinal game against Glendale. Well, the Falcons put an end to that streak with their dominating 73-40 win to advance to the program's second Final Four.

'300' - Feb. 3rd, 1981 - Future Missouri Tiger Greg Cavener and his Parkview Vikings had blasted Glendale earlier in the '80-'81 season, 78-43 at Falcon Court. By the time the teams were ready to meet again in February, the Vikings were ranked number one in Missouri Class 4A. The first time ever a Springfield team had been ranked #1. The Falcons(17-2) were coming off winning the Union(Mo.) Tournament by defeating eventual Missouri Class 3A Runner-Up St. Francis Borgia. In the biggest upset in program history, Glendale defeated the mighty #1 rated Parkview Vikings, 40-38 in overtime. Glendale's then all-time leading scorer Rand Chappell made a bank shot off a Bob Ridder pass with one second remaining in the first overtime to win the game for Glendale. It was the 300th victory in program history, the 300th win for head coach Jack Roberts as Glendale coach, and the first time Glendale had knocked off a #1 ranked team. Springfield News-Leader headline the next day, "Glendale Stuns Parkview in Overtime."
|
5 |
'780' - In only two varsity seasons, Tyler "The Man" Rullman scored 1,403 career varsity points. As a junior in '87-'88, he put up over 600 points in leading the Falcons to the 4A Quarterfinals. As a senior in '88-'89, Rullman scored 780 points in 29 games. That's a per-game average of nearly 27 points! Tyler continued his playing career at Harvard and then played some pro ball in Europe after graduating.

'#1 in the State' - Twice in program history, Glendale has been ranked number one in the state by the Missouri Sportscasters and Sportswriters poll. During the final week of the 1993-94 regular season, the Falcons moved past St. Louis Vashon to be rated the top 4A team. In 1998-99, Glendale won the Blue & Gold Tournament, while the current number one ranked team, Troy-Buchanan, lost to Jefferson City. In the first poll of the new year, Glendale moved up to #1 in Missouri Class 4A. They would remain #1 throughout the month of January. Ironically, it was a late January loss to Jefferson City that knocked Glendale down to number three in early February. The Falcons were ranked in the top five during the entire '98-'99 season, which is the only time that has happened in program history.

7 |
'40' - Jan. 12th, 2007 - Spud Harbour became Glendale's all-time leading scorer during the 2006-07 season with 1,584 career points, but his 40-point outburst at the Tournament Of Champions remains a true highlight from his career. The Falcons were facing a top ten ranked team in the country in South Medford, Oregon with Duke signee (and eventual NCAA Final Four MVP) Kyle Singler. The Panthers would go on to win the Oregon 4A State Champioship (beating Kevin Love's team in the title game), but they got everything they wanted from the Falcons that night. Spud's 40 points (only the second time in school history a player has scored more than 40 in a game) helped Glendale push South Medford to the limit, falling 77-82.
|
8 |
'42' - Between February 12th, 1988 and December 13th, 1991, Glendale won 42 consecutive home games at Falcon Court. It is one of the longest home winning streaks in state history! The Falcons had a remarkable 15-0 home record during the 1988-89 season. That also stands as one of the best single season home records in state history. Only Parkview's Jolly Green Giants can match it in the area with 43 home straight wins in the 1960's.
|
9 |
'47' - Tom Shultz set the Glendale single game scoring record on Jan. 11th, 1974 against Springfield Central at "The Pit" by putting up 47 points on 21 of 23 shooting from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. The record still stands.
|
10 |
'4-PEAT' - Glendale had a four-year run in the late-80's, early-90's that stands as the best in program history! Four consecutive Ozark Conference titles (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991) and four consecutive Class 4A, District 11 titles (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991). The Falcons advanced to the 4A Quarterfinals in 1988, 4A Sectionals in 1989, 4A Final Four in 1990, and another 4A Sectional run in 1991. They were ranked among the top ten teams in Class 4A each of those four seasons. Also, Glendale had a little home winning streak during the same time period, which will be apart of the top ten moments/events list.
|
11 |
'Coach Roberts/Falcons Reach Quarterfinals' - The closest Glendale came to reaching the Final Four under head coach Jack Roberts occurred in the 1979-80 season. Glendale took out Greg Cavener and the Parkview Vikings 52-47 on March 8th, 1980 to win the program's fifth district/regional championship. The Falcons had won a share of the Ozark conference championship with Parkview during the regular season. In the first round of state tournament play, Glendale defeated Springfield Central 76-71 on March 10th, 1980 to advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in program history. For the first three quarters, with Glendale leading William Chrisman 46-38, it appeared as if the 5,669 at Hammons Student Center would finally see Glendale reach the Final Four after nearly 20 years of trying to get there. However, William Chrisman had other plans with a 16-8 fourth quarter, which forced the game into overtime. Chrisman would outscore the Falcons 4-0 in the extra period to deny Glendale the Final Four berth. Glendale's 26-4 record that season would stand as the best in program history for nearly 20 years.

'Glendale Upsets #2 Kickapoo' - Jan. 2nd, 2002 - Glendale 66 - #2 4A Kickapoo 63 - Coming off winning the William Jewell and Blue & Gold tournaments respectively, Glendale and Kickapoo were set for a big showdown at Kickapoo. Local sports radio host Art Hains was asked if any local team could beat the highly touted Kickapoo Chiefs...he said no local team could even play with the POO. Well, early on it didn't look good for Glendale being down 31-19 at halftime. However, Glendale battled back throughout the second half to pull off one of the biggest upsets in school history! The Falcons had some key three-pointers fall and made 16 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter. Over the course of two seasons, Kickapoo only lost two games to Missouri teams, Neosho and GLENDALE! They had four NCAA Div. 1 athletes and a couple of other college bound players (Div. II and NAIA) on that squad, which would go on to a 26-2 record that year and win the Class 5 State title the following season.

'Falcons Play Broadway' - Dec. 4th, 1998 - Glendale became the first Missouri (and possibly the first Midwest) high school sports team to compete in New York City by dominating the Bronx, NY Fordham Prep Rams 61-19 in Middle Village, NY at Christ the King Regional High School. It was actually the opening night for the '98-'99 New York City Catholic League for that season when Christ the King played St. Raymond's after the Glendale-Fordham Prep game. One NYC basketball old timer said Glendale was the best fundamental team he'd seen in years. Former Duke star and then Seton Hall head coach Tommy Amaker attended the games. The team was also able to tour many parts of the metro area (including St. Patrick's Cathedral) during their four days in the city. There were a few reminders of home in a Tournament Of Champions banner (with Springfield, Missouri on it) in the Christ the King gym and former St. Raymond's star Darryl Reid's Missouri State jersey hanging in the Ravens gym.
|
14 |
'45-3-2' - Glendale has had only three losing seasons (and two .500 seasons) in 50 years of basketball. That's one of the best records in the entire region. Since Glendale opened in '63: Nixa - 8 losing seasons; Kickapoo - 8 losing seasons; Parkview - 15 losing seasons; Hillcrest - at least 14 losing seasons; Ozark - at least 12 losing seasons; Central - at least 22 losing seasons; Logan-Rogersville - at least 5 losing seasons

'The Comeback!' - Feb. 11th, 1994 - #2 4A Glendale 53 - Kickapoo 52 - Glendale was down 42-52 with :57 seconds left in the game. The Chiefs went on to miss the front end of four one-and-one free throw attempts to leave the door open for Glendale. Stu Stenger missed a free throw in the final moments of the game, but Brian Cates got the rebound and put it back in to give the Falcons a one-point lead. Kickapoo's Ryan Helming missed a last second three-point shot that would've won the game for Kickapoo. The News-Leader headline the next day said "Falcons simply unbelievable!" and Kickapoo head coach Roy Green proclaimed it "probably the toughest loss I've ever had." Glendale players, parents, and coaches went to a local restaurant directly after the game to find Kickapoo parents celebrating their "victory"...clearly those parents left the game a little early!

'2nd Place Finish at '99 Tournament of Champions' - Glendale became just the third local team to make the championship game of the Bass Pro Shops Tournament Of Champions in 1999. In the first round, the Falcons dispatched Paintsville, KY like it was a first round Blue & Gold game, 74-36. In the semifinal contest, Glendale faced the Socastee Braves from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who had been ranked among the best teams in the South region by USA Today. The Falcons weren't intimidated at all in defeating the Braves 57-44 (it wasn't that close!). After the game, Socastee head coach Dan D'Antoni came into the Glendale locker room and told the Falcons we could play with any team in the country! It was a remarkable moment. Socastee ended up making the South Carolina Final Four and finished with a 26-7 record. Coach D'Antoni left Socastee after 25 years to join his brother as a coach in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks. In the championship, Glendale played the St. Raymond's Ravens from the Bronx, New York. Although, the Falcons didn't play extremely well thanks to St. Raymond's using a zone defense for the first time in the history of the school, Glendale did cut the Ravens lead to only four points with about :20 seconds left, but eventually fell 53-61. Afterwards, St. Raymond's coach Gary Decesare explained the zone defense to Glendale head coach Mike Keltner with a sharp, "We weren't going to let you run your (expletive deleted)."
